Police Step Up Patrols Near Barlow

The Redding Police Department announced that it will increase its presence on the roads around Joel Barlow High School during the holidays.

Chief Doug Fuchs and Principal Thomas McMorran sent an email to remind parents of driving restrictions for young drivers.

“Restrictions on drivers who have had their licenses for less than a year have been increased over the last few years,” the email stated. “For instance, during the first six months that a student has his or her license, the only passengers that the student can drive are his or her parents or guardians. During months seven through 12, passengers can include any member of the student's immediate family. However, a student may not drive a friend during those first 12 months.”

Fuchs and McMorran said the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles is a good resource for understanding current and pending teenage driving laws.

“Please discuss the importance of safe driving with your teen driver, and we ask that you underscore the absolute importance of not texting or talking on a phone while operating a vehicle. ... Let’s keep our kids safe.”
