EASTON, Conn. With the new year about to begin, The Daily Easton asked First Selectman Thomas Herrmann to look back on the year gone by and to give us some insight on what he foresees for the town in 2012. These are his answers:
1. Looking ahead into 2012, where do you see Easton going?
The beauty of Easton and what we love about Easton is that nothing changes. Easton is loved by a group of preservationists who like the town just the way it is.
2. Is there anything that you would like to see implemented in the upcoming year in Easton?
I would like to see our agricultural community become much more active this year. I would like to attract more members from our surrounding areas to come to Easton and take advantage of our locally-grown farming community. I would like to see Easton become more of an agriculture destination.
3. We had a very tough year in terms of weather. There was an earthquake, a hurricane and an unusual snowstorm in October. What would you like to say to Easton residents about this winter?
I have to say, 2011 was marred by curious meteorological occurrences and Tropical Storm Irene clearly caught everyone off-guard. We learned so much from Irene and were able to get the roads cleared much faster when we were hit in October. But I do have to say both storms reinforced the need to take a long-term view of the power distribution system in town.
4. Looking back, what are some of your fondest memories in Easton? Is there anything that you are most proud of that helped benefit Easton and the community?
I am proud of that fact that we have made great strides in education this past year. Our test scores have been extraordinary and having Helen Keller Middle School named a Blue Ribbon School is a testament to the legacy of Joan Parker.
I also think that the addition of Superintendent Bernie Josefsberg has been a great inspiration to the Easton community and (Helen Keller Middle School Principal) Sue Kaplan was the perfect choice to succeed Joan. It has been a great year for education in Easton.
5. Looking back, do you have any regrets? Is there anything that would change what happened in the past year?
I dont necessarily have any regrets but I really hope that [Message Center Management] puts to rest this endless search for a cell tower that is greatly needed in Easton. My hope is that it is done on town land so the town and the community can benefit from the revenue stream.
