Irene Not as Bad as Easton Expected

EASTON, Conn. — Easton has multiple road closures and flooding, but a fire official said Sunday the town made out better than expected.

"I think Mother Nature cut us a break," said Steve Waugh, Easton's assistant fire chief. He said a number of trees fell and took some wires down with them. United Illuminating is dealing with the power outages, and the highway department is clearing the town's roads of debris, he said. 

United Illuminating reported 1,356 households without power in Easton at 1:10 p.m. 

"We thought we were in the clear, but this beautiful pear tree literally just tipped over. Luckily, it fell away from the house," Laura Baytos of Easton wrote in an email to The Daily Easton on Sunday.

Waugh said the following roads remained impassable: Everett Road, Tursana Drive, Route 59 north of Church Road, parts of Judd Road and Silver Hill Road. Lower Route 59 has been reopened. Waugh said the closures are "sporadic" around town.
