and Camps Are In

WESTON, Conn. — A camper at the Creative Arts/ Enrichment program last summer would wrap up the food she made each day and take it home to her mom.

"She was always so proud of what she made, she wanted to show her mom," said Charlene Monn, program coordinator.

The Creative Arts/Enrichment camp, along with two other camps, kick off Monday. The Creative Arts/Enrichment camp is a three-week program for students entering grades 3 through 6. It features dance, art, music, movement and cooking and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On the last day of camp, July 15, the students will put on a performance for their families and peers showing off their dances, artwork and more.

New this year is Cooking and Culinary Crafts where students entering seventh and eighth grades cook up recipes from around the world, including cuisine from Italy, Spain, Asia and France.

Fun with Karate, Models, Science and Magic also begins Monday for students entering grades 1 through 3. The two-week camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Adventures Through Model Building, Models and More starts July 11 for students entering grades 2 through 5. During this two-week program, students build models, set off rockets and more from noon to 3 p.m.

Also new this year is Inspirational and Experimental Dance, Art and Yoga for students entering grades 2 through 5. This two-week program starts July 18 and runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

"At these camps, children are exposed to things that are new – like yoga – and learn to put together a recipe and learning the difference between tablespoons and teaspoons. They make things themselves and have a chance to try it and test it out," said Monn. "The instructors are welcoming and love what they do. That's why I think the camps are great."

Engineering with Legos starts July 25 and runs for a week. There are two sessions, one for students entering grades 1 through 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and another for students entering grades 4 through 6, from noon to 3 p.m.

"These camps tap into [kids'] imaginations. It lets them try new things and gives them an opportunity to go to camp with their friends," said Monn. "It's a relaxing, fun environment where campers are familiar with their instructors. It's an alternative to an all sports camp."
