Goat "Kids" Coming to Weston Saturday

WESTON, Conn. — Weston children will be able to get up close and personal with kids of a different kind as Myrtle the Lap Goat brings along a few friends to the Weston Winter Farmer's Market on Saturday.

Myrtle, who lives at the Butterfield Farm Co. in Granby, stopped by the market a few months back. But over the winter, several of her herd mates gave birth to the next generation of milking does. Parents and children will be able to pet, cuddle and take pictures with Myrtle and some of those baby goats, also known as kids, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Every year, Butterfield Farm names the new offspring after a specific theme. Myrtle was named after the Crape Myrtle flower. Some have been named after food. This year’s generation is named after cities. On hand during the market will be Havana, Cleveland and Seoul.

Children will be able to get their pictures taken with some of the does, who in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, will be dressed in Irish-themed outfits.

Representative of Butterfield Farm will also be on hand to talk about the different breeds of goats, how to care for them and just how similar they are to human children.

"Our farm philosophy is to support the local community and treat all our animals with respect. We are thankful to those who have helped us and are committed to giving back to the community every chance we get," farm owners Tara Bryson and Michael Hearl say on their website.
