Getting Painted for a Good Cause

To help benefit children around the world affected by disasters, Westport's Main Street merchants like Mariana Reinhardt are teaming up with Save the Children. Reinhardt, owner of The Brownstone, is taking part in a store-front window painting competition organized by Save the Children as part of their "Make a Difference" community fundraising program.

"We are really excited about the event," Reinhardt, 46, said. "Anything related with the town is important, especially when it has to do with children because they are our future and it's important for us to work with them."

The competition will be held Aug. 13-27. Window painting will take place Aug. 13-15, and the art will be displayed from Aug. 16-27. The winning design, which will be announced Aug. 27, will be determined by how many $1 votes the design receives.

Other Main Street merchants taking part in the event include Banana Republic, BCBG, LF, LOFT, Lululemon Athletica, Oscar's, Shoe-Inn, Shoes N More, and Westport Pizzeria.

Ashley Karpel, manager at LF, said once she heard about the competition, agreeing to take part was a no-brainer. "I think it's a great way for stores to give back. It's a good way to get the community involved too," Karpel, 24, said. "I'm pretty excited."

You can sign up online by Aug. 9 to participate. Donations from the competition will go toward supplying toys and games to children in areas affected by disasters. The kits include beach balls, basketballs, jump ropes, marbles, blocks, dolls and other toys, and are intended to provide children with a sense of normalcy through difficult times. More information about the competition can be found online.
