Fourth of July Booms in Weston

WESTON, Conn. -- Makenzie Lehman, of Weston, likes to watch the fireworks on the Fourth of July – especially the pink and red ones. She and her family will go to Compo Beach in Westport during the day on July 1 before watching the fireworks on the coast.

"I like to play on the beach and build a sandcastle. I try to dig to China," said Makenzie, who will most likely watch fireworks again at Weston Middle School on July 4.

Weston's Fourth of July activities start early with an open swim at Bisceglie-Scribner Park. Residents and their guests can swim between 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Tickets for the fireworks display at the middle school will be on sale at the School Road gate starting at 4:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for those age 5 and up and free for kids under 5.

New this year will be a 9 p.m. laser show put on by Connecticut Lasers. The fireworks, by Atlas Advanced Pyrotechnics, start at 9:20 p.m.

"It's exceptional. We always have a really great show," said Dave Ungar, director of Weston Parks and Recreation. "It's one of those days where everybody gets together." Ungar said he expects about 4,000 people to show up for the event.

Families can bring their own barbecue. The Georgetown Saloon also will sell chicken, hot dogs and hamburgers from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Sal Larussa, band director at Weston High School, will play patriotic music with the Westport Community Band from 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. During that same time, the Magic Genie will make his rounds blowing up balloon animals and wowing the crowd with his magic. The Straight Note Chasers Band will perform top 40 hits from 7:30 p.m. to 9:20 p.m. and then again from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.

There will be parking on all school lots on School Road. Ungar recommends arriving early to avoid missing the show. School Road at Lords Highway will be closed at 7 p.m., and only the main entrance on Weston Road will remain open. The rain date is Tuesday, July 5.
