James William Boston, a former music teacher at Coleytown Middle School in Westport, died on Aug. 17, four days before his birthday. He was 67 years old.
Jim, as he was known, lived in Fairfield 45 years. He was born Aug. 21, 1942, in Pittsburgh to the late John H. and Christine (Hoffman) Boston.
He was the band teacher at Coleytown Middle School for 35 years until he retired in 2000.
After retiring, he spent a lot of his time camping with his family. And when he wasn't camping, he was working at the Fairfield Senior Center as a bus driver.
Claire Grace, director of the Senior Center, said he will be greatly missed by all who knew him at the center.
"Jim Boston was one of the most wonderful men I have ever met. He was wise, kind to everyone and loved by all," Claire said via e-mail. "Jim's passing was a terrible loss to us."
After graduating from Carnegie Institute of Technology with bachelor degrees in education and performance, Jim went on to receive a master's in education from the University of Bridgeport.
He was the first director of the former Fairfield Teen Center and was active in youth programs at First Church Congregational of Fairfield. He also worked at Silver Lake Conference Center.
Survivors are his wife of 47 years, Barbara Bowman Boston; four daughters, Heather Garbacik and her husband, Edward, of South Hadley, Mass.; Holly Routhier and her husband, Robert, of Fairfield; Sarah Barker and her husband, Alex, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and Rebecca Dowd and her husband, James, of Fairfield. He also leaves behind his sister, Jean Fullen, and her husband, William, of New York City, and 13 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at First Church Congregational in Fairfield in the fall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or by calling 1-800-805-5856.
