Firefighters Put Out the Trash

Today’s rains came a little too late to help Westport firefighters douse a dumpster fire at 20 Woody Lane today. Units responded to the scene at 1:25 p.m. and were gone by 2:31 p.m.

Firefighter arrived at the scene off of Cross Highway following a report of heavy smoke. At the site, a construction worker was trying to put out a fire in a 12-yard roll-off dumpster, with a garden hose.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The construction materials in the dumpster weren’t fully extinguished until the firefighters used a nearby fire hydrant.

Assistant Fire Chief Robert Yost reminded residents, through a release about the fire, to never attempt to put out a dumpster fire with a garden hose. There is a possibility of explosion from aerosol cans and other cylinders. The smoke might carry toxic chemicals as well. Yost recommends always calling the fire department and maintaining distance from the fire.
