Firefighters Fill Boots to Battle MD

Westport firefighters were out in full force Saturday, not to put out a blaze, but to try to extinguish a disease that continues to smolder even as advances are made toward its cure.

Members of the Westport Fire Department lined the entrance road to Compo Beach as part of its "Fill The Boot For MDA" campaign, an annual activity the weekend before the Jerry Lewis telethon against muscular dystrophy.

"Things have been steady," Larry Conklin said at 11 a.m. "They're starting to pick up as people see what a nice day it is, get organized and come to the beach." The firefighters were on hand before 8 a.m. as runners arrived for the Road Runners Summer Series race and planned to stay at their post until about 3 p.m.
