Farm Fundraiser Gets the OK

Lisa Marriott left Wednesday's, July 14, Board of Selectmen meeting happy. After a brief presentation she walked out of the meeting with unanimous approval for the Green Village Initiative's request to hold a fundraising event at the Wakeman Farm in the fall.

While the initiative sponsored a few fundraisers for other organizations in the past, it has never hosted one for itself. The Board of Selectmen approval allows the group to use the farm for an event that includes Connecticut produced food and wine.

"We've done a few events to help out other groups but this is really the first one for the Green Village Initiative itself," said Marriott as she stood outside of Town Hall following the vote. She expects at least 300 people at the event.

As a precursor to the actual wine and dine on the farm, the group is selling a promotional T-shirt that has residents asking, "WTF?" The shirts play off of the expletive-driven Internet acronym in a way that drew chuckles from members of the selectmen and most everyone else that has seen them. Just under the huge stenciled letters, "Wakeman Town Farm" is spelled out, giving the joke a punchline.

The back of the shirt displays the date of the planned fundraiser, "10-2-10." Marriott said it was a good number. "And I told them I would only do this if they gave me good numbers," she said jovially.

Miggs Burroughs designed the shirts. He is a graphic artist and designer responsible for many of the logos around the region, with clients including the Town of Westport and corporate companies like Gault.

The T-shirts are on sale at the Westport Farmer's Market and Wakeman Farm on Thursday, July 15. They'll also be available at Bobby Q's on Saturday, July 17. They cost $10 each.
