WESTON, Conn. When a Weston father asked Allan Houston about the value of winning, the former NBA player said although winning should be the main goal, the most valuable lessons can be learned from losing.
Houston, an ex-Knick and current assistant general manager of the New York team, spoke to Weston dads during a Fathers Forum on Saturday, June 18. He spoke about the importance of taking time out of a busy schedule to spend time with kids, said Kristin Ferrara, Weston's youth services director. The most important aspects of a father-child relationship are love and communication, Houston said.
Houston said that when he goes home to his Greenwich house, his six kids are always excited to see him. He makes it a point to put away his Blackberry, shut off the television and focus on his kids.
As an example, Houston said his son like to listen to rap music, so he took the time to sit down with him and talk about what the lyrics meant.
Ferrara said about 80 people attended the event, and Houston spoke for nearly two hours. After his presentation, he signed autographs and took pictures with the families.
Some of the kids in the audience asked Houston questions, including, "How many games have you played in your life?" and "How many points have you scored?"
