WESTON, Conn. — The family members of Weston’s elected officials got the credit they deserve Tuesday night, as they became the surprising focal point of the oath of office ceremonies at Town Hall.

“Without the family support, I know, very well that is could not be possible,” Secretary of the State Denise Merrill told the elected officials at the swearing-in ceremony.

In a crowded meeting room at Town Hall, about 20 newly elected officials gathered with their families to be officially sworn in as the leaders of Weston. Attendees included First Selectman Gayle Weinstein, Selectman David Muller, Tax Collector Charity Nichols, Town Clerk Donna Anastasia, members of the Board of Education, Board of Finance, Board of Assessment Appeals, Zoning Board and the Police Commission.

The public scrutiny, the long hours and the late-night meetings can be difficult, but behind every public official is a dedicated family offering support and reminding them that they are doing it all for the betterment of the town. Weinstein echoed Merrill’s comments, saying that “serving on a town board is a real commitment” and many in the room would not be there if it weren’t for their families.

“We really owe a lot to them,” Weinstein said.

The first selectman also gave thanks to all those who made the elections possible from “the candidates to the poll workers to the residents.” She also thanked those who were unsuccessful in their bids for public office, commending former selectman Dan Gilbert, who lost the first selectman race to Weinstein.

Weinstein told the newly sworn in officials that now is the time to look ahead to create the Weston that they all envision. She also said she was excited to be working side-by-side with Muller and newly elected Selectman Dennis Tracey.

“I am so thrilled to be working with the two selectman,” she said, “I already felt that during the election we were all working as a team for the town of Weston.”
