The killing of two baby foxes Saturday has prompted a ban on dogs running free at the Crow Hill Preserve in Easton.
"It reminded us at the Trust that with the huge surge of usage by folks who have dogs, many of our wild animals are even more threatened, especially at this time of year when the very young are not capable of defending themselves or even escaping a predatory dog," said Lisa Brodlie, Aspetuck Land Trust vice president.
The Aspetuck Land Trust has posted signs around the Elm Road entrance to the preserve informing hikers to leash their dogs past the entrance areas, where they are usually allowed to be free. This rule will be in effect until further notice, "getting us through the season of young animals born in the wild," Brodlie said.
"We are also reminding users of our preserves that our first responsibility is one of conservation -- and that means fauna as well as flora," said Brodlie.
