EASTON, Conn. Civil War buffs will have their moment Saturday during Civil War Encampment Day, sponsored by the Historical Society of Easton to celebrate the 151st anniversary of the Civil War.
The event, set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bradley-Hubbell House at 535 Black Rock Turnpike in Easton, will include a series of reenactments of Company F, 14th regiment of the Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, the states largest contingency of Civil War soldiers who fought with Lincolns army and participated in 34 battles.
The soldiers will practice military drills with firing demonstrations and reenact the daily life of Civil War soldiers, pitching tents and showing a knapsack and blanket roll. At noon, the soldiers will eat lunch prepared with period foods.
Civilian women reenactors will give presentations on nursing and battlefield medicine.
Not all of the day is devoted to the military. At 1:30 p.m., Jeff Lawrence will discuss how baseball originated from the game of town ball, which was played during the Civil War. Jen Eastman-Lawrence will sing period music starting at 1 p.m.
There will be activities for kids, who can pump water, grind corn and perform basic farm chores. A toy historian will be on hand with colonial games for kids.
Visitors will be invited to speak with Civil War soldiers and civilians and view demonstrations of 18th and 19th century farm tools.
Lisa Burghardt, an Easton resident and president of the Historical Society of Easton, estimates an expected crowd of between 100 and 500 people for the event. Admission is $5 per person, with no charge for children 2 and younger.
