Easton, Weston Farms Get State Agricultural Grants

EASTON/WESTON, Conn. -- The state has awarded state grants to two farms in Easton and Weston aimed at boosting local agricultural economies.

Sweet Apple Farm of Easton will receive $875 from the state for planting a new farm-production orchard, and the Town of Weston will receive $17,500 for improvements to the Juliana LaChat Farm.

The funding, which requires a match from the grantee, is designed to increase farm production, promote Connecticut grown products and create jobs.

State Rep. John Shaban (R-Easton-Redding-Weston) praised the grants.

“Our farms and preserves are a valuable source of locally-grown food and agricultural education within our community,” Shaban said. “I’m pleased these state dollars are coming back to Easton and Weston, and will be used to boost our local economy and enhance the cultural landscape of the towns.”

Funding may be used for the following purposes:

  • Construction of greenhouses
  • Building/modernization of retail farm-product stands
  • Expansion of wineries
  • Promotion of farmers’ markets
  • Construction of an aquaculture eel-raising facility
  • Improvement of dairy, mushroom, Christmas tree and fruit farms

The grant is one of more than forty distributed throughout the state through the Agriculture Department’s Farm Transition Grant and Farm Viability Grant programs.
