Easton Voters Seem to Favor Romney

EASTON, Conn. – Sixty-five Easton Republicans cast votes in the first three hours of the primary election Tuesday and support for Mitt Romney seemed to be running strong.

“Romney’s got a stronger chance. He proved it in the debates and he’s better prepared to get rid of Obama,” said town resident Charlie Lynch.

Richard Vertula said Romney will have a very good chance of beating Obama. “Look at the conditions out there, the deficit spending and the unemployment. Those are the two best reasons,” he said.

Carol Wolff voiced support for Newt Gingrich, but cast her vote for Romney. “Gingrich has a lot of experience, but Romney has more firepower,” she said.

Her daughter, Abigail Wolff, said she’s a registered Republican who voted for Obama in 2008, “but I made the wrong decision.” Now she supports Romney, “who’s ready to restore what we lost,” she said.

When asked whether her favored candidate can beat Obama, Dorothy Beno, said, “Anybody can beat Obama.”

Krista Kot, the registrar of voters, said a presumed Romney victory shouldn’t dissuade citizens from voting in the primary. “It’s not over until it’s over, and races have been won or lost by a few votes,” she said. “It’s a good day to exercise your right to vote and it’s very important to do it.”

There are 1,686 registered Republicans in Easton. They can cast their votes at the Samuel Staples Elementary School until 8 p.m.
