Easton Selectmen Want Town Clerk To Be Open Later

EASTON, Conn. – Do you think the Easton town clerk's hours should change? That is exactly what the Board of Selectmen were wondering during a recent meeting.

First Selectman Thomas Herrmann said he received a complaint from a resident, whom he did not identify, who did not like that the town clerk’s office hours did not match other offices in Town Hall or other town clerks in the region.

Currently, the Easton town clerk's office is open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays. Town Hall offices are open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Selectman Robert Lessler said the town clerk's office should be open “as many business hours as possible” because it is heavily used by residents. “It makes no sense to me that the town clerk closes at 3:30 p.m.,” he said.

Herrmann said the office should “be extending the hours to 4:30 or 5 o’clock” so the hours would match throughout all of Town Hall.

But resident Bev Macey told the selectmen that she relied on the early hours because she works out of town and generally arrives home late. “I think having the office open at 8 is helpful for a lot of us,” she said.

When asked for comment, Town Clerk Derek Buckley said he didn’t see any reason to change his office's hours. In fact, Buckley said he has taken a survey of residents who use the town clerk and “99 percent come in before 3 o’clock, 70 percent come in between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.” Buckley said every time he stays open late “nobody comes.”

“I think they are making a decision based on no information,” Buckley said.
