Easton Republicans Favor Shays for Senate

EASTON, Conn. – The Easton Republican Town Committee favors Chris Shays for U.S. Senate and split its support between Chris Meek and Steve Obsitnik for U.S. House of Representatives in the Fourth Congressional District.

At its meeting Wednesday night, 20 members of the committee voted in both races. In the Senate race, Shays won 12 votes, Linda McMahon, 7, and Kie Westby, 1. In the  congressional race, Meek and Obsitnik won 8 votes each, and Richard Wieland received 3 votes.

The five members of the committee who attend the Republican State Convention in Hartford on May 18 will cast their votes in proportion to the vote totals from the entire committee, so three will vote for Shays and two for McMahon at the state convention. Meek and Obsitnik will receive two votes each and Wieland one in the congressional race.

Adam Dunsby, chairman of the town committee, said members will vote proportionally on the first ballot. But if candidates don’t get a majority and a second ballot is held they can vote for whomever they like. He projects no candidate will be chosen by delegates in the Senate race and a primary will be held, giving voters the opportunity to select a candidate.
