EASTON, Conn. ? A 42-year-old Easton woman and her 17-year-old son were arrested Saturday following a dispute in which the mother threw a barbell at the boy.
At approximately 4 p.m., the 17-year-old went to police headquarters to report that his mother had threatened him with a knife and threw a five-pound barbell at him, police said. Police Capt. James Candee said the mother and son, who live on Asmara Way in Easton, told conflicting stories.
The son told police he asked his mother if he could go to a local high school football game and his mother agreed, but only after he completed his chores, Candee said. The boy told police when he finished his chores an argument between the two intensified and the boy went upstairs to collect his belongings and leave.
The son said at that point his mother grabbed a knife from the kitchen and approached in a threatening manner, Candee said. The son then grabbed a baseball bat to defend himself, according to the police. Although no physical altercation occurred in the home, police said, the mother threw the barbell at her son as he was leaving. Although the mother admitted throwing a barbell at her son, she denied threatening him and said she only grabbed the knife to defend herself after her son picked up the baseball bat, the police said.
The mother was charged with risk of injury to a minor, which is a felony, and her son was charged with disorderly conduct and reckless endangerment. Both are expected to appear in court next week, police said.
