EASTON, Conn. The Easton Firemans Carnival got off to a rollicking start Tuesday night, with more than 1,000 patrons enjoying the rides, food, bingo and more.
Its a lovely event and the weathers perfect, said Missy Savard, a Fairfield resident who grew up in Easton. I've come since I was little and now I bring my little ones. Theyre on the rides and Im on my way to bingo.
The bingo game was one of the biggest events, with cash prizes awarded every time someone got bingo.
William Hein, of Easton, played the Hoop Shots game with his son looking on.
I enjoy the rides and the games, he said. The small-town atmosphere makes the carnival special.
Tony Grasso, a volunteer fireman, worked the Candy Game, where patrons threw balls onto a board in an attempt to win jumbo Hershey bars.
Ive lived in Easton for 35 years and this is the fire departments one and only event of the year, he said. He was spotted eating a hearty dinner before starting the game and said, The food tent is the best.
Siren Aide, the fire departments ladies auxiliary, operated the dessert tent with an assortment of homemade pies and the renowned peach short cake, which has been a carnival favorite for years.
Kids enjoyed a variety of rides, from traditional favorites like the Ferris Wheel to zooming new rides, including the Cliff Hanger, Zero Gravity, Roco-Plane and Zumor.
Patrons bought raffle tickets for $25, hoping to win a bright red 2012 Jeep Wrangler.
Proceeds from the raffle, rides and food concessions will support fire department activities.
The fair continues through Saturday on the green in front of the fire house, 1 Center Road, with parking available on Sport Hill Road.
