Easton Drivers Warned About Deer After 2 Mishaps

EASTON, Conn. – Two car-versus-deer accidents just minutes apart Thursday brought a new warning from Easton police for residents to slow down.

Both incidents occurred Thursday morning, and although the drivers were unharmed both deer were killed. The first incident occurred at 7:40 a.m. when a driver struck a deer on Route 58 near Aspetuck Valley Orchards. When officers arrived, the car had left but the deer was dead on the road.

Just 15 minutes later, police received a call that a woman struck a deer on Westport Road. When officers arrived, they found that the 40-year-old woman, Katharine Gemelli of Greenwich, was driving without a valid driver’s license. She was issued a $158 infraction.

Police Capt. James Candee said drivers need to slow down when traveling through the wooded roads of Easton. “These deer have a mind of their own and if they decide to go into the road, they are going. They aren’t looking out for you. You have to look out for them.” 

Candee said the department knows that not all deer accidents can be avoided, but he said they could be reduced in number if drivers slowed down.
