EASTON, Conn. About 200 residents attended Eastons 9/11 Memorial Dedication on Sunday afternoon, the culmination of an eight-year campaign to create a memorial to honor the victims of the terror attacks. Those killed includes Easton resident Peter Hanson, who died with his wife and 2-year-old daughter on United Airlines Flight 175.
Im excited to see it finally finished and to see the Hansons, said Bev Dacey, chairman of the Easton 9/11 Memorial Committee.
The ceremony included remarks by memorial committee members and music, including an original composition by Peter McCann and Katie Tressler.
The memorial was designed by architect Mark Halstead. Built by local tradespeople and artists, it celebrates the lives of the victims of 9/11.
The memorial is placed in front of the Easton Public Library, which now has another plan that provides an opportunity to learn, said Bernadette Baldino, executive director of the library. She said children could learn about 9/11 as they view the memorial.
The Police Benevolent Association contributed an American flag with the names of 9/11 victims on it that will be presented by the library.
The memorial is dedicated to people who lost their lives because others hate our democratic way of life, Baldino said. Its a place for the community and a place that is living, not a piece of stone.
