Easton Carnival Lights Up on Opening Night

EASTON, Conn. -- No sooner do the rides light up at 6 p.m. than traffic slows and pedestrians start rushing across the street to Easton's 76th Annual Firemen's Carnival.

"We plan our vacation around the carnival," said Allison Kovac of Easton. Her son, TJ, was zooming around on his favorite ride--the cars--on Tuesday.

"I like going on Zero Gravity," said Agnes Bebon of Easton. "It goes really fast and you can climb around on the walls."

Agnes was at the carnival Tuesday with her friends Daisy Navin and Alexandra Azarian, all of whom will enter eighth grade at Helen Keller Middle School in the fall.

"If your hair is wet, that's the way to dry it," Daisy said of the carnival's Zero Gravity ride.

The carnival draws people from many of the surrounding towns with its rides, games and delicious food. The Siren Aide of Easton sells pies and biscuits prepared upstairs at the firehouse, as well as donated desserts.

"It's a lot of fun and a lot of work, but it's worth it," said Bernadette Coughlin of the Siren Aide of Easton. "The kids in town look forward to it each year--it's a tradition."

Amy Jordan and her family traveled from Fairfield for the carnival. "The kids like the rides [and] I love the food," said Jordan.

Tuesday was the first night of the carnival. It will continue through Saturday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 11 p.m. Rides include the Ali Baba, Zero Gravity, Bumper Cars, Super Slide, Cliff Hanger, Scrambler, the Rip Cord and rides for kids such as the Dinosaur Ride, Swings, Dizzy Dragons and the Cobra.

Everyone crowds the bingo tent to see who can get five in a row first and win the cash prize. There is also a Camaro SS up for grabs in the firemen's raffle. Second prize is a $500 gift card to Stop & Shop, third prize a $250 Mobil gift card. The winner will be announced at 11 p.m. on Aug. 6. Raffle tickets are $25.
