EASTON, Conn. -- Easton shelter dogs live in a 50-year-old facility with no running water and only enough room for seven dogs.
"There are a lot of dogs in town. If I went on vacation and came back to find my dog in that place, I would be mad," said Bud Jennings, a member of the Animal Shelter Building Committee. "It's antiquated -- there are no facilities."
A new animal shelter, located on Morehouse Road, was expected to be completed "months ago," said Jennings. The construction team -- Carlson Construction -- submitted a completion schedule, which lists Monday, Aug. 29 as the final clean-up day.
Two representatives from Carlson Construction told the Board of Selectmen on July 21 that delays were due to changes in sub-contractors, according to the minutes from the meeting.
The new shelter will be more than five times bigger than the current shelter located on Westport Road. It will have room for 12 dogs, a number of cats and it will have an office, bathroom and a cleaning room. The town bonded $188,000 for the shelter with the remaining costs covered by state grants.
