Demolished Home Helps Serve Firefighters

Before its scheduled demolition Thursday, the home at 7 Salem Road served a purpose for the Westport Fire Department.

On Wednesday night, firefighters got some practice under their belts by using the house as a training ground. And because many structure fires occur at night, the eve of the home's destruction was optimal training time, Assistant Chief Robert Yost said in a statement.

Firefighters on the Truck Company, under the direction of Lt. Michael Kronick, got to hone their rooftop ventilation skills by working under lights in the dark. At the same time, Headquarters Engine Company 2 worked on forcible entry and firefighter self-rescue under the direction of Ernie Ruot.

With no formal training facilities in the town, the department thanks the owners and builders that donate structures for training purposes before the structures are demolished.
