State Senator Toni Boucher has done many things worthy of a tip of the cap. Monday morning she received one, for her work on education reform issues.The Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now (ConnCAN) presented her with their Tip of the Cap award at Wilton High School.
Being honored by ConnCAN took the senator back to her beginnings both in politics and in life. She said she got into public service to make a difference. She tried to do this as a member of the Wilton school board and the State Board of Education. I so strongly believe that ensuring a good quality education is a moral obligation we have to all of Connecticuts children, and the key to a bright future for our state, Boucher said.
An immigrant from Italy, Boucher learned from her parents that getting a better education leads to a better life. She quoted her father as saying, Education is everything. It is the way out of poverty and the path to true freedom, Boucher credits those words as the motivation she needed to push for higher quality education in Conn.
ConnCAN was formed in 2005 by education entrepreneurs from around the state who are working to close the achievement gap. The group started the Tip of the Cap award this year to recognize legislators who are effective advocates for the cause. Boucher was one of five honorees.
Boucher lives in Wilton and is serving her first term as state senator for the 26th district. She's running for re-election in November against John Hartwell of Westport. The 26th district includes Bethel, New Canaan, Redding, Ridgefield, Weston, Westport, and Wilton.
