Commissioner Of Education Visits Weston High School

WESTON, Conn. - Stefan Pryor, the state commissioner of education, visited Weston High School Thursday afternoon during a tour of Fairfield County high schools that also took him to Bridgeport, Ridgefield and Fairfield.

Pryor met with Superintendent of Schools Colleen Palmer and First Selectman Gayle Weinstein and toured the school, which is serving the community during the recovery from Hurricane Sandy.

Pryor lauded Weston High School for its response to Hurricane Sandy. "It's a smart set up, from resources like cots for overnight stays to Internet access," he said.

He praised Palmer for suggesting an extension of Nov. 1 deadlines to file for early admission to colleges, which is necessary with power outages and curtailed mail service.

"We passed her suggestion on to Governor Malloy who notified U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan who issued a notice to American universities," Pryor said. "Many have extended their deadlines by days or longer."

He said the commission seeks to assist schools in re-opening as quickly as possible.
