People come by during the day and paid $25 to throw their tree into the pile. At 6 p.m., they reconvened and lit the bonfire, an event that has become an annual nondenominational town tradition. The church also serves up chili and cookies for those in attendance.
The Warmup Fund helps needy area families heat their homes in winter.
"I think it's fantastic," Dan Lerner, who was there dropping off his tree with his two boys, said of the bonfire. "It's a great way for families to get out on a winter night, and a good use of the Christmas Trees. It's a great community gathering, and all for a great cause."
