Businesses Get Media Savvy

Members of the Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce will get some help spreading their business messages. On May 17, the chamber will host a Media Workshop at the Westport Playhouse. The educational event will feature presentations from an array of area media experts.

“Our members consistently reach out to us for assistance with their promotional needs,” WWCC Executive Director Lisa Thygerson said in a press release. “So much so, in fact, that we implemented public relations offerings in addition to our other supportive services. We grew to realize that many business owners weren’t aware of all the media opportunities available to them.”

The Media Workshop is the newest initiative in the WWCC's education series to teach entrepreneurs how to use the resources available to them to expand their businesses. Print, radio, television and web media outlets will be represented at the event. Topics will include lessons on preparing  a variety of materials from press releases and public service announcements to pitching stories to the media. Attendees will learn about planning for deadlines, formulating angles and how to determine if something is news-worthy versus advertising-worthy.

Expected speakers include John Breunig, Managing Editor of The Advocate, Stamford; Amy Packham, Executive Producer of News 12, Fairfield County; Kristin Okesson, Vice President and General Manager of Cox Media Group, Stamford and Norwalk and Liz Mitchell, Editor of Westport Patch.

Check-in for the Media Workshop will start at 5:30 p.m. with the presentation scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. A reception is scheduled after the workshop presentation. To make reservations call 203-227-9234 or visit  www.westportwestonchamber.com.
