Bus Driver Hospitalized in Accident

UPDATE: The driver of the Westport school bus involved in an accident Friday morning was hospitalized due to his injuries, but none of the 23 Coleytown Elementary students was seriously injured.

"There were some very minor bumps and bruises, but beyond that, nothing serious," Westport Police Lt. Jerry Shannon said.

Shannon could not comment on the extent of the driver's injuries.

The accident happened this morning shortly after 8:30 just over the Westport-Weston line on Lyons Plains Road. Weston Police Sgt. Matt Brodacki said it appears that the bus veered off the road while traveling north on Lyons Plains Road, striking a tree.

Weston police are currently investigating the cause of the accident with assistance from Westport police.

Although such an experience was no doubt traumatic for students, Westport Superintendent of Schools Elliott Landon said he is grateful the students are OK.

"We are delighted that none of our students were seriously injured in this accident and thankful for the quick response of the town's emergency personnel to this incident," Landon said in a release. "We also are proud of the actions of our school bus monitor to ensure the safety of all our students."
