Boating Death Declared an Accident

The death of Charles Lucas, 58, of Franklin Avenue, has been declared an accident by the state medical examiner’s office. An autopsy conducted Tuesday determined that multiple blunt traumatic injuries following Lucas going overboard were the cause of death.

The accident itself is still under investigation. Westport Police Capt. Sam Arciola said the results of a blood-alcohol test on the boat’s operator will not be available for at least a few days. The test is standard procedure in any accident that results in a fatality.

Westport police responded to a “man overboard” call at 10:22 p.m. following the July 2 fireworks off of Compo Beach. Lucas was recovered by occupants of another boat while the 51-foot motorboat he was a passenger on was still searching for him. When police arrived he was unconscious and unresponsive.
