The roads in Weston will be a little easier to share if a new Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee works as planned. The selectmen approved forming a committee to find ways to promote safer ways for bicyclists and pedestrians to get around in town. First Selectman Gayle Weinstein is asking for individuals interested in being on the board to volunteer.
The town is looking for "people who want to volunteer to try to find a safe place to bike and walk in our communityto see if there's anything we could possibly do for the town roads to make them bike and pedestrian friendly," she said. Weinstein said the board could explore the possibility of closing a selected road such as School Road on a Sunday, for example, to allow bicyclists and pedestrians to roam car-free.
"I think our roads are dangerous to bike and walk on," said Weinstein, who walks a 3-mile loop every day on Godfrey Road. "That road was not made for two SUVs passing, much less two SUVs, someone walking or a bike. The cars come flying way too fast, and I'm hugging the road."
On Aug. 28, a 14-year-old Weston teen said he suffered minor injuries while he was riding his bike on Birch Hill Road and was struck from behind by a white SUV that left the scene.
According to the committee's mission statement, the group will work with police, town engineer and director of public works to find solutions. The committee will also write up bike-pedestrian etiquette rules.
Weinstein said the town needs seven people to serve on the committee. Anyone who is interested can send a letter of interest to Judy Devito at Town Hall. She expects the members to be selected at the Board of Selectman meeting Oct. 7.
