With brushes, paints and other materials handy, local artists, including 11-year-old Tyler Carter, were scattered about Main Street in Westport on Sunday night, making their marks on storefront windows to help raise money for Save the Children.
Tyler, a student at St. Thomas Aquinas in Fairfield, was stationed at The Brownstone, where he painted a colorful flower on the store's biggest window.
"One reason I wanted to paint the flower is because I won an art show with it," Tyler said, referring to a school art competition in which he won Best in Show with a similar design.
Tyler's mom, Tabitha, said she learned about the competition from family and knew Tyler would enjoy it.
"It's a nice opportunity that allows artists to display their work while raising awareness and raising money for Save the Children," she said. "If his art can help this wonderful cause, it teaches him a great lesson in volunteerism."
The competition came together thanks to the vision of Emily Platt, a summer intern at the Westport-based organization.
An incoming senior at Staples High School, Platt said inspiration came from an event she took part in previously.
"I thought adding the competition aspect would be a fun way to get more people interested," said Platt, 18. "These stores are right in our backyard, so I thought, 'Why not get the community involved?'"
Artwork will be on display from Monday to Aug. 27. People can vote for their favorite design in the stores or online. The winning design, which will be announced Aug. 27, will be determined by how many $1 votes it receives.
Money raised will go toward the purchase of child-friendly space kits, which provide fun and educational toys to children internationally after disasters.
