WESTPORT, Conn. – Thirty of the 36 members of the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) plan to seek re-election this fall, according to Town Clerk Patricia Strauss.

Representation on the RTM, a non-partisan legislative body, is based on population from nine districts, four members from each district. Members are elected for two-year terms.

Districts 1, 2, 4 and 7 have all four incumbents running. The remaining five districts have openings. Districts 3, 5, 6 and 8 each have three incumbents running, and District 9 has two incumbents running.

Members not running for re-election are:

District 3 – Medha Thomas

District 5 – Paul Rossi

District 6 – Paul Lebowitz (who is running for Planning and Zoning Commission)

District 8 – Peter Knight

District 9 – Kate Boyle Kirby and Rick Weber

Currently, five petitions have been issued to persons interested in running as a petitioning candidate. To date, none of those petitions have been returned.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Westport residents to become involved in the workings of their Town. The non-partisan RTM plays a vital role in town government and its decision making function. I urge interested citizens to file a petition to be placed on the ballot,” said First Selectman Jim Marpe.

Residents interested in running for the RTM may obtain a petition at the Town Clerk’s office, located in Town Hall, room 105. Strauss noted that petitioners must gather 25 signatures from their district to qualify for placement on the Nov. 3 ballot. The deadline for returning a completed petition to the Town Clerk is Tuesday, Sept. 8.
