Youngsters Perform Holiday Concert in Westport

WESTPORT, Conn. – Children from Westport and Weston entertained a crowd of family and friends at a Westport church, performing holiday favorites as part of a winter music marathon.

The program, led by Westport-based teacher and classical pianist Jenny Ong, was held at the Unitarian Church in Westport on Dec. 18.

Dressed in their holiday best, Ong’s students recited “Twas the Night Before Christmas” and “The Nutcracker,” while others entertained with seasonal, piano-friendly classics.

Highlights included “Carols of the Bells” by Owen Tanzer, of Weston; “The Sugar Plum Fairy,” played by Westport’s Walsh Geelan; and “We Three Kings” performed by Weston’s brother-and-sister team, Henry and Sophie Collins.

“In the wonderful atmosphere of the Unitarian Church, it was a pleasure to witness the passion and playing of these young talents. The music range was diverse and the audience most enthusiastic,” said attendee Paul Ewing, president of Wings Music Inc. in New York.

Ong, a 12-year Westport resident, trained both abroad and in the States. She has studied at the Sydney Conservatorium, University of Texas at Austin and Columbia University, where she obtained a master's in music and music pedagogy.

Ong has performed as a soloist, accompanist and collaborating artist in the metro New York area, and her repertoire spans Baroque to contemporary compositions. Currently, she combines her love for the piano with her penchant for teaching.

“My students are like extended family to whom I wish to pass on my love for piano performance. I am forever amazed at their growth and dedication, and at this year’s recital, could not contain my pride,” Ong said.

It seems Ong inspired students and audience members alike. “Once again, Jenny’s bright and warm light shone down upon our children, infusing them with passion, creativity, discipline and aspiration,” said Weston parent Jeff Bernstein.
