EASTON, Conn. After her yard was riddled with branches and leaves after the October snowstorm, Ruth Foster didn't know what to do because the town of Easton does not remove debris.
Then it hit her the town should create a brush removal service for residents.
In the aftermath of the October snowstorm, Easton promptly removed debris from all town roads, which was great, but did not offer residents any pickup opportunities for debris fallen on their property, she said.
Some people, such as those who live along Staples Road, apparently thought the town would be coming by and piled brush (near the roadway), which is now obstructing sight lines in certain spots and is not adding the beauty to our town, said the Valley Road resident.
To protect the beauty of Easton, she said, the town needs a debris removal service just like other towns in the region. Foster said she contacted Bethel, Newtown, Redding, Weston and Wilton and found that they all had a place for residents to dump brush and debris.
Foster proposed her idea to the Board of Selectmen on Thursday. I think Easton should establish a supervised brush dump for resident use, to be open two Saturdays each month, Foster told them.
She also said she would like to see Easton purchase a woodchipper, if it does not already own one, to be used periodically on the brush."
"The woodchips could be made available to residents, as the stone dust is now," she said.
Foster also asked that the selectmen at their meeting Thursday to consider a one-time pickup of brush piles on the sides of town-owned roads after major weather events. The Board of Selectmen did not discuss her request.
