Westport Weston Y Readies For 90th Birthday Community Celebration

WESTPORT, Conn. – The Westport Weston Family Y has planned a 90th birthday party next month to celebrate its 90 years of service to the community.

The Family Y will celebrate its 90 years of service to generations of members and its longstanding role as a center of community life and wellness Sept. 18.

The birthday party is scheduled for Sept. 18 and will shut down Church Lane for special activities throughout the day for Y members, supporters and the public.

Founded by Edward Bedford, a Westport businessman and philanthropist, the Family Y opened Sept. 5, 1923. The Family Y is at 59 Post Road E., Westport, but construction on a new location began earlier this year.

The event’s celebrations include the following itinerary for Sept. 18:

4-6 p.m. – Church Lane will be closed for a range of family activities, like special performances by Y gymnasts, a bounce house and other games for young children, music, food vendors, a display of vintage cars and a pep rally for the Water Rat Swim Team.
5:30 p.m. – Cake and a group sing-along of “Happy Birthday, Family Y” will be held on Church Lane. Local volunteer leaders will make a special announcement about the new Y.
