WESTPORT, Conn. Calling all seventh-graders: Put down that Xbox remote, sign off of Facebook and head over to the Westport Weston Family Y.
In an effort to promote the importance of exercise and nutrition as well as boost self-esteem, the Family Y is offering free one-year memberships to all seventh-grade students in Westport and Weston through its 7th Grade Initiative.
"The Family Y would like to help our youth choose a lifestyle that includes physical activity, character values and community involvement," Vice President of Operations David Cohen said in a statement. "The 7th Grade Initiative is a way to better engage, educate and connect with our kids, right when they need it most."
To get a free membership, students accompanied by a parent or guardian must bring a school identification card or report card to the Family Y. Students will also be asked to commit to at least one volunteer opportunity at the Family Y, participate in a group tour of the facility and complete orientation sessions in the Fitness Center to learn how to safely use the equipment.
Free programs and activities available to these students include use of the weight and cardio rooms, open swims and open gyms, group exercise classes, racquet sports and spinning classes. For a schedule of offerings, visit the Family Y online.
"Our Family Y has a longstanding tradition of creatively adapting its services to the changing needs of the community," Family Y CEO Rob Reeves said in a statement. "By providing our youth a place to improve their health, wellness and happiness, we are helping to shape their futures."
This initiative is funded through the Family Y's Strong Kids Campaign, which is supported by donations.
