The new equipment — Stryker/Physio-Control LUCAS 3 chest compression systems — can be used on those in cardiac arrest while keeping Westport Volunteer EMS personnel safe.
The automated system offers optimal, high-quality compressions that can be deployed in seconds and can be used while moving patients and in difficult access points, such as narrow hallways and staircases.
The grant was given in honor of Newman’s Own Foundation’s 35th anniversary and was awarded to some of the original recipients of Newman’s generosity.
"WVEMS is a local, life-saving organization that Paul Newman, as a Westport resident and business owner, supported 35 years ago,” said Kelly Giordano, the foundation’s managing director. “Today, we are glad to be able to help them update their equipment and continue their important work.”
Yves Cantin, president of Westport’s volunteer EMS, said his organization was honored to be recognized with a grant.
“It allowed us to go outside our regular annual budget and make an important capital acquisition, adding to our top-notch life-saving equipment,” he said.
