Westport To Promote Eco-Friendly Living On GreenDay'

WESTPORT, Conn. — From gardening activities at Wakeman Town Farm, to a litter clean-up at Longshore and guided nature hikes at Earthplace, Westport residents of all ages can get in tune with nature this Sunday during GreenDay, a townwide celebration of green living.

The daylong event, hosted by Staples High School’s Club Green, will showcase eco-friendly initiatives and organizations through a series of events across town, starting with a “Hurricane Sandy” debris beach cleanup at Longshore from 8 to 10 a.m.

Sponsored by Builders Beyond Borders and the Westport Parks and Recreation Department, the cleanup is geared toward people of all ages and families. Residents interested in participating in this event are encouraged to bring hiking or rubber boots, work gloves and a bottle of water to drink.

After helping to clean up the beach, residents can head over to Wakeman Town Farm from 10 a.m. to noon to help plant the gardens, attend mini gardening workshops, talk with local farmers, and learn about Community Supported Agriculture and local farmers markets. There will also be a variety of children’s activities and crafts.

From noon to 2 p.m., Earthplace will host guided nature hikes and pond science activities. Electric cars, courtesy of the Westport Electric Car Club, will also be on display and Encon Solar will host a toy solar-car building activity.

The days events will also include two different film screenings. The Westport Library will screen Dr. Seuss’ classic “The Lorax” from 2 to 4 p.m.

From 4 to 6 p.m. at Westport Town Hall, Westport Cinema Initiative will show “A Place At The Table," a documentary that highlights the epidemic of hunger in the United States. The documentary features Tom Colicchio of “Top Chef” fame and actor Jeff Bridges. The screening will be followed by a question and answer session. Tickets for this activity are $10 per person and will be available at the door.

All GreenDay participants will receive a 15 percent off coupon that can be used at participating restaurants and businesses Sunday only.

Due to upcoming construction at the Levitt Pavilion, GreenDay is being held instead of EcoFest, an annual eco-friendly festival hosted by Club Green at the Levitt Pavilion.
