Westport Officials Give Thanks

Thanksgiving is finally here. Although watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade and football games and eating until you're stuffed are some traditions, Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks. And this year, Fire Chief Chris Ackley said he's got plenty to be thankful for.

"I'm thankful I got my two firefighters back from Iraq and Afghanistan safe and sound," Ackley said. "Also, despite all the negativity from political powers in town about my firefighters and their contracts, my guys still go out and do a first-class job for the residents."

Beyond his post as fire chief, Ackley said he is perhaps most thankful for his father.

"I'm thankful for amount time I get to spend with 95-year-old father and all the things he's done for me in my life," he said.

Police Chief Al Fiore said he's thankful for "all the wonderful people" he works with, both inside and outside of the department. He is also thankful to live and work in Westport as well as for all his friends and family.

Town Clerk Patricia Strauss said this year, like every year, she's most thankful for her family and friends. She's also thankful for good health and for the memories she has of those who have passed away. From a business perspective, she said she's thankful the election ended without a recount.

"And I'm thankful we printed enough ballots," she said.

Finance Director John Kondub is also thankful for many things, including having "hit the financial market when we did" for the bond re-funding, the people he works with inside and outside of the department and "having two great friends like Chief Ackley and Chief Fiore."

First Selectman Gordon Joseloff said he is thankful for Westport.

"I'm thankful for this great town and our great community," Joseloff said. "At times it seems that we're all going in different directions, but we are a wonderful community. And I hope everyone is as healthy as can be."
