WESTON, Conn. With the first day of school just around the corner, summer camps are coming to a close. Will Brooks practiced his soccer skills Thursday at the R. Nunez Soccer Camp in Weston.
The R. Nunes Soccer Camp finished its last day Friday. A total of 60 kids ages of 3 to 13 strengthened their foot skills, played games and scrimmaged with coach Koli Bala.
"They play fun games, make new friends and keep their relationships with other kids," said Bala, who has been coaching soccer in Weston for six years. For some of the campers, this was their first time kicking a soccer ball.
"It keeps them active. There's a lot of running, sprinting and quick feet. And it keeps them away from computers," he said.
Bala said Weston soccer has grown "dramatically" in the past four to five years. By improving the players' foot skills, the quality of the game has grown, he said.
On Thursday, the campers were practicing on the turf field at Weston High School. They practiced passing, dribbling and scoring. Bala said the parents, the board of the soccer league and the coaches have all worked to improve the quality of soccer in Weston.
