WESTON, Conn. - It might look like any other house on Old Stagecoach Road but the home of Rob and Marci Linke was named the Outstanding Energy-Efficient and Green Custom Home by the Home Builders Association of Connecticut.
Cutting down on utility use was a large factor in the homes creation. The homeowners decided use a tight, heavily insulated, thermal frame that reduces the amount of energy needed to heat the home. The 4,000 square-foot home also has a hybrid hot water heater and two masonry heaters which absorb and retain heat.
Most of the construction of the home was done offsite in New Hampshire, which cuts down on the environmental waste that commonly occurs with onsite construction.
Counter tops and flooring throughout the home were made of natural stone and the roof is a light colored metal. Most home builders in New England choose a darker tinted roof, solely for ascetic reasons, but light colored roofs are gaining popularity since they are designed to reflect sunshine in the summer and retain heat in the winter.
The home was designed by Bensonwood Homes architect Chris Adams that showcases a modern take on the classic New England barn. Offsite construction was done by Bensonwood and onsite construction was done by Timberdale Homes, based in Bethel.
