When Jen Guha graduated from Weston High School in 2008, her sights were aimed high. A self-taught guitar player and vocalist, Guha's passion for music was instilled in her from a young age.
"I write about love and heartbreak," she said. "It's hard to describe the style, but I guess it's pop rock with a little country."
In September, Guha graced the stage at The Bitter End in Greenwich Village, a venue made famous by acts such as Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Norah Jones and Lady Gaga. "[Lady Gaga] played there when she was Stefani Germanotta," Guha said, hinting that merely playing at The Bitter End can launch a musical career.
She also performed on Community Auditions, one of the longest-running entertainment TV shows in history.
Guha's influences range from Christina Aguilera to Ani Difranco and Johnny Cash. Her voice echoes some of her influences, as she mingles speaking-in-tone with sustained notes draped in optimistic melancholy.
"I also really like Justin Nozuka, he's little less well known," she said.
When she's not strumming her six string, Guha is hitting the books. She is a junior in the honors program at UConn, studying political science with hopes of attending law school. She also started an a cappella group at UConn called Notes Over Storrs, a pun taken from Wings Over Storrs, an eatery on campus.
"We have 11 members. We've done songs like 'Hurt' by Johnny Cash, a couple of rock songs and stuff by Regina Spektor."
Guha said that she hopes to travel to India and do her thesis on class systems or another aspect of Indian sociopolitical life.
Music, however, is her first love and primary passion. For now music is a hobby, but as for the future, "you never know," she said.
