Nina Hammerling Smith of Weston doesn't color her Easter eggs with regular old dye she uses onion skins. "You never know what you'll get. It's a natural way, and your hands aren't dyed afterward," she said.
Here is Hammerling Smith's recipe for onion skin eggs:
First cover the egg completely with the onion skins, then cover the onion skins with aluminum foil.
Gently drop the eggs in a pot of water and let them boil for seven minutes. Remove the eggs from the water and let them rest in a colander for a few minutes before rinsing with cool water.
Then remove the aluminum foil and onion skins to reveal the colored egg.
Julia Armijo, a sophomore at Weston High School, will take part in an Easter tradition with the children she babysits. "They take their dyed eggs and throw them into a pond and make a wish," said Armijo.
