Japan might be on the other side of the world, but that's not a deterrent to Ben and Jake Ferraro, second-graders at Hurlbutt Elementary School in Weston. The brothers are determined to raise money for the country, recently devastated by an earthquake and tsunami. That's why the twins have initiated Baking for Japan, a bake sale to be held Saturday in Westport.
"I felt really bad for the people in Japan," said Jake, 7. "I want to help people in need and the less fortunate [in Japan] so they can have money to buy what they need, like food, water and medical supplies."
Ben said he felt the same as his brother and together, they thought up the bake sale. And this isn't the first time the twins have taken action to help a country plagued by disaster. Last year, after Haiti suffered a massive earthquake, the boys organized a bake sale to benefit rescue efforts there.
About 25 families from Westport and Weston participated in last year's sale, which netted about $1,500, said Robin Ferraro, the boys' mom. Proceeds were donated to the Westport-based nonprofit Save the Children and Convoy of Hope.
This year, Robin said nearly 30 families from both towns are participating. And although the boys are confident they'll raise more funds this year, Robin said the event isn't just about money.
"Hopefully, we will be just as successful as we were last year," she said. "But no matter what the outcome, what is most important is that we took action and worked together with our friends and neighbors to support a very worthwhile cause." Plus, she said it's a great example that people of all ages, not just adults, can make a difference.
The bake sale will take place outside Stop & Shop at 1790 Post Road E. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds will be donated to Save the Children. Everything from cookies, cupcakes, brownies, chocolate-covered pretzels, snickerdoodles and pizzelles Italian cookies made by Sal Ferraro, the boys' dad will be on sale for $1. Check donations payable to Save the Children can also be made.
"Please come to our bake sale," said Ben.
