Gary Meier and his friends have met at the Saugatuck Reservoir in Weston on the opening day of trout fishing season for the past 20 years.
Weve been here in T-shirts, and weve been here in snow through the years, said Meier, who lives in Stratford. The fishermen arrived at their spot on Davis Road at about 4 a.m. John Nangle of Milford caught the biggest trout: It was just under 20 inches and about 4.5 pounds.
We give some of them away to the seniors. Its great to see a big smile on their face, said Meier. The best way to cook trout is in a frying pan with butter and lemon, served with tossed salad and corn. Mmm mmm mmm.
People from all around Connecticut came to this spot on opening day. Meiers group included fishermen from Monroe, Trumbull, Bridgeport, Shelton, Weston and Easton.
Also fishing Saturday were three freshmen fishermen from Fairfield-Ludlowe High School. Cameron Poler, Tyler Erickson and Tony Centopanti have been fishing since birth but hadnt caught anything as of 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
