Old Man Winter will be visiting soon, and patrons of the Easton Senior Center are getting ready. This means coming up with clothes and other necessities for the scores of struggling area families who need assistance keeping warm.
But not just any clothes. The past few weeks, ESC volunteers have been knitting scarves and hats to donate to groups such as Family Services Woodfield and Children First. Kay Oestreicher, ESC's assistant director for five years, said even home-bound Eastonites have contributed to the 100-plus handcrafted items ready for donation.
"We try to do things like this every year," Oestreicher said. "We have fund-raisers like the silent auction to raise funds so we can support families in need."
Before the knit items go to families they are placed as ornaments on a Christmas tree, or "giving tree" as Oestreicher calls it.
ESC is holding the silent auction Nov. 12-23 to help raise additional funds for community services. Auction items range from paintings and old books to antique roller skates and unique Nativity scenes.
