Senior Rides Get a $25K Boost

More accessible rides for seniors and the visually impaired will soon become a reality in Fairfield County, thanks to a recent grant awarded to ITNCoastalCT, Manager Nancy McCormick said.

The driving service, which hopes to soon drive members to doctor appointments, shopping trips and other errands, was awarded a $25,000 grant from the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County. Potential passenters in Weston, Easton, Westport, Norwalk, Fairfield and Wilton will be able to pay a membership fee for the "arm-through-arm, door-through-door" service, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

McCormick says drivers go through extensive background checks before they are hired. Drivers are trained to help riders with packages and walkers and will help the customer to the door of wherever they choose to go.

For potential members and their adult children, two informational sessions will be held: at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 15 at the Wilton Senior Center, at the Comstock Community Center, 180 School Road, Wilton, and at 11 a.m. Oct. 22 at the Westport Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Ave., Westport.
